Construction orders up 3 per cent
The total volume of construction output rose by 3 per cent, according to latest government figures. The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform reported a 5 per cent rise in orders in the 12 months to December, with increases in all sectors except public non-housing and infrastructure output. New infrastructure orders and public non-housing orders were down by 5 per cent compared with the previous year. On a more positive note, private commercial orders soared by 14 per cent compared to a year earlier. Private housing work was up 1 per cent compared to the previous year, but new work in the public housing sector fared much better at 16 per cent higher than the previous year (on a small base figure).
